Huckleberries in Massachusetts

Growing up in Massachusetts, there is a lot of diversity in wild and edible foods. From apple trees to cranberries and blueberries to  Huckleberries. Edible flowers and mushrooms can also be found all across Massachusetts.  Out of all the edible foods that can be sourced in the wild, hucklberries has probably one of the most fascinating histories and best health benefits. They are also probably well know to the senior population as something they ate when they were younger.

Billberries, also more commonly known in Massachusetts as huckleberries, are similar to blueberries in both appearance and where they grow. They are a powerful antioxidant and can be arguably be called one of the most underated superfruits of all time. Huckleberries have also been a staple food in the diet of Americans in the settlers days and have helped to make history for the colonies.

Today, while you can find some huckleberris in the local supermarket, it usually will not be found in the fruit isle. Billberries will be packaged up usually as only another health supplement. The reason for this, well, no one really knows how to grow them. Luckly for us residents; however, they tend to grow wildly and in abundance in Massachusetts. So much so, that most of our native senior population have probably had them plain off the bush or in their food at home as a substitute for blueberries.

Hucklberries, are good for seniors and people of all ages. They promote eye health, help to maintain a good blood sugar and have more vitamins and antioxidants than pomegranates. While we may not be able to buy them for our parents, just ask them and they should be able to tell you how they taste and where to spot them. They may very well be surprised to hear them mentioned at all since that was more something they did when they were little. Eat huckleberries, that was something they have not had in years.

Feel free to pick some though if you see them. Like all things new though, It may be best to consult a doctor before you reintroduce such a vitamin into their diet again just as if they were to take any other vitamin supplement as part of their daily regime.
