Nextstep in Massachusetts

Growing quickly and with determination, NextStep is a major player in the ever-changing landscape of healthcare in Massachusetts. There are few other skilled nursing home facility operators who are competing on there level, especially in areas south and southwest of Boston. Premier healthcare and Genesis healthcare, appear to be their two biggest competitors in the area.

Both NextStep's CEO and CFO, founded the company back in 2007, according to their website. Coming from extensive careers in the field these two and their team definitely seem to know what they are doing and where they want the company to be in the future. They currently manage many homes including Wedgemere in Taunton, Wareham healthcare in Wareham, as well as many other facilities. Their reach in Massachusetts as a whole is quite extensive, from Cape Cod to the Berkshires to Fall River and many places in between.

Currently, Next Step is taking a very aggressive "step" in trying to recruit workers. A search online, through popular job boards, shows how desperate they are to attract good talent. Certified nursing assistants (C.N.A.) are being offered as much as $20 an hour plus differentials in some of their homes. Licensed Nurse Practitioners, (L.P.N.) are being offered much more as well.

With the race to the top in pay and benefits to attract talent, is it also a race to the bottom in terms of sustainability or will this fuel the fire so to speak in the collapse of more skilled nursing facilities in the fight to stay ahead of the move for patients to stay home and the skilled home care. Time will tell, but with the lack of workers and the cost of agency staff, they have little other option it seems to attract the workers that they need.
